Mendeed: From shadows came darkness

10/11/08  ||  theProphet

Once again Mendeed, the pride of Wales (along with that town with that impossibly long name, and their cool flag with the dragon) is up for review here at GD. This after someone sent us a batch of some of their former releases.

This was my intro up to the point when I decided to check my facts and found out that Mendeed is in fact not Welsh, they’re Scottish actually. Fuck it, the intro stays. It’s not the worst I’ve done by far, that’s for damn sure.

Moving along, apparently Mendeed isn’t even a band anymore, they called it quits back in 2007. Now they appear to exist solely for the purpose of sending awesome metal webzines their old releases, much to the great annoyance of this particular reviewer. You see, Mendeed plays that most boring of musical styles: melodic death metal. My god, how I hate it. It’s a fucking enigma how this bullshit genre even got to have “death metal” in its name. There is nothing death metal about this musical cyst whatsoever, and you fucking know it. I mean, what the fuck can I write about this? This is just so dull and unimpressive and the collective originality displayed on “From Shadows Came Darkness” is fucking zero. If metal genres were fish, melodic death metal would be those small fuckers stealing the bait a soon as you fucking lower the hook into the water. Melodic death metal is the “romantic comedy” of music.

Two things stand out enough to mention specifically however. The piano intro on track one is pretty nice, I could swear that they’ve stolen it from somewhere else though. Secondly, the vocalist is one of the absolutely worst I’ve ever heard. You know the typical melodeath vocals? That generic, hysterical, angsty screaming? This guy sounds exactly like someone who tries to parody that vocal style. My fucking god. This is so bad I wouldn’t even mind if he switched to some lame clean singing every now and again. He doesn’t, and for once I’m sorry about that. Also, his name is fucking DAVE PROCTOLOGIST?! What the fuck?! “Hi I’m Dave, rectum specialist, and I have my vocals to prove it.” Game over.

Seeing that Mendeed is not from Wales as I first assumed, but from Scotland, the competition regarding being a national pride gets a little stiffer. It’s safe to say that Mendeed doesn’t even come close to whiskey, claymores, bagpipes, caber tossing or haggis. I would say that they rank about as high as that football keeper Scotland had in the world cup back in ’98. Jim Leighton. Man, did he suck…

3 impressive feats of blandness with hideous vocals out of 10.
